Paavo Nurmi is a Finnish hero winning nine Olympic gold medals and three silver medals across three Olympic Games in middle distance running (inlcuding cross-country running). Reports say that he’d have won more except for typical petty officialdom. Time consider him the greatest Olympian of all time and his running successes across distances from 800 metres to 10,000 metres are unequalled.
Some wonderful photos of Nurmi and his Wikipedia entry detail more of this champion athlete.
With all those medals he certainly deserves a statue
Well said.
I’d heard the name before but didn’t know that much about him, thanks for the links and info about a great athlete and Olympian, such a refreshing antidote to the modern doping/cheating/felons that are idolized and subsequently demonized today.
I love the story too and still a hero to this very day in Finland. Being amateur, it sounds a softer but more golden age of athletic pursuit than the modern supremely professional approach.
