Just because you’ve left it to the last minute doesn’t mean you can’t save money on car hire. You can often take advantage of great last minute deals in order to save some cash, on top of which, you could save even more – if you know where to look, and what to look for. Choose the Right Car
When making your booking, take into account the size of car you need. You will probably notice that smaller economy cars are cheaper to hire, so if that’s all you need, save some money and go small. Doing this should also save you some money at the pumps, as smaller cars generally suck up less petrol.
Even if you do choose an economy car, if the car hire desk has no economy cars left, they are obliged to give you an upgrade to the next size up for free. However, it’s not a good idea to rely on this though – if you need a bigger car, it’s best to book a bigger car.
Fill it Up Yourself
The car rental company may give you the option of filling up the petrol tank before you return the car. This is usually the cheapest option, so it’s usually a good idea to take it. This way you can control which petrol station you use and how much you pay.
If you want to get a good deal on anything, you will need to compare the market. Check out a variety of options online to find the best deal. You might also find some great last minute deals just by putting in a few extra minutes of research.
Length of Car Hire
When comparing car rental deals online, it’s worth playing around with options. Sometimes longer rentals can work out cheaper than shorter ones day-by-day, so try out a few options to work out the best option for your needs. You may also find that hiring the car one day is cheaper than another, for example, renting the car on a Tuesday may be cheaper than a Friday.
Do you Need Extras?
When making your car rental reservation, you will probably be asked if you need any number of extras – from GPS units, to child booster seats, and so on. Think about what extras you really need, and work out whether it’s worth paying for them.
Do you Need Insurance?
Most car hire companies offer insurance to customers in case the car gets damaged. It’s totally up to you if you want to take the insurance, but be sure to read the terms and conditions before you sign. It’s also worth checking out whether your travel insurance or credit card travel insurance covers you for car rental accidents.
While saving money on last minute car hire bookings is possible, it’s worth bearing in mind that it sometimes works out more expensive at busy times, such as holidays. Whenever you’re making your booking, always try to compare as many options as possible, and choose the option that best suits your needs (cheaper is not always better!).
