Florence Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio has spanned the Arno since 1345 though the Romans built the first bridge here over a thousand years earlier.

QUICK FACTS

Location: Florence, Italy
River: Arno
Built: circa 1345
Length: 84 metres
Style: Segmental Arch Bridge

One of the most famous bridges in the world, Ponte Vecchio was initially lined with butchers shops but now houses overpriced shops such as jewellers, art dealers and trinket sellers to attract tourists. Its unusual backshops were added later but it has always been a centre of sales and trade in Florence.

The idea of bankruptcy may be emerged from the Ponte Vecchio where a seller who could not pay his debts would have the table where he displayed his wares broken by armed soldiers. The method was known as banco rotto (broken table) or banca rotto (broken bank).

Whatever its history, the view of the city of Florence, the river Arno and the superb Ponte Vecchio from Piazza Michelangelo is superb.
