A city synonymous with high culture, fashion and fascinating historical locations, it’s not hard to imagine why Paris is the world’s top tourist destination. Over 28 million tourists make their way to the European hot spot every year in order to enjoy the city’s iconic landmarks and even those who haven’t been to the popular holiday destination still conjure up images of the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe at a mere mention of the city. Whether you’re catching a cheap flight for a quick weekend break or you’re looking to explore this beautiful city in depth, Paris has plenty of breath-taking sites to offer up to the eager traveller.

France’s City of Culture

Considered to be one of Europe’s leading centres for learning and the arts since the 12thcentury and just a short flight away from the UK, this European holiday destination has no problem maintaining its position at the forefront of culture. Upon arriving in the city one of the first things any art lover must do is visit the impressively majestic grounds of world famous art gallery the Louvre. Upon reaching the art museum you’ll be met with a time-defying sight of the gallery’s modernist glass pyramids juxtaposed by the surrounding Gothic style architecture of the Louvre Palace. The 8 million art lovers who visit the museum each year are met with a stunning display of the world’s most prized art collections dating from prehistory to the current century. Unparalleled in its brilliance, the world’s most visited museum is home to the prized ‘Mona Lisa‘.

Also make sure you swing by the Champ de Mars to catch a glimpse of the awe inspiring Eiffel Tower. No trip to Paris is complete without first taking in a view of this tribute to engineering genius, first erected in 1889. Standing at 1,063 ft tall, the height of this internationally famous landmark is incomprehensible until you’re standing beneath its towering gaze. Visitors can make their way up to the third observatory platform where they can enjoy the sights of Paris from 916ft – the highest accessible viewing point in the European Union.

For a little luxury on your Paris holiday take a stroll down the Champs-Elysees. One of the world’s most famous streets, the location is abundant with quaint bistros, luxury shops and lined with beautifully clipped horse-chestnut trees. The street is also rife with landmarks – whilst you’re there you can pay a visit to the towering Arc de Triomphe. Located at the western end of the road, the monument is one of France’s most striking images and stands to honour those who fought for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It’s a particularly wonderful structure to behold at night when the lights illuminate its full majesty.

The Notre Dame de Paris is another popular sight amongst tourists with its detailed architecture and deep historical roots providing plenty for holiday makers to explore. After getting off the plane you can make you way to this intimidating cathedral located on the Ile de la Cite. Considered to be one of the best surviving examples of French Gothic architecture and one of the most well-known cathedrals in the world, this beautiful testament to man-made structures looks beautiful all year round, with its high spires and intricate stained-glass windows standing out against the back-drop of Paris. Beneath this awe-inspiring cathedral holiday goers can delve into the secrets of the crypt, containing parts of the settlement still existing from its 1300 origins and perhaps holiday the key to this wonderful building’s past.

With so many picture perfect attractions in Paris, holiday goers are spoilt for choice as to how to spend their getaway weekend or week-long family holiday. The city’s hidden treasures can be found lurking behind every corner, waiting to be discovered.
